Who is the doctor taking care of me in the hospital? First in the Emergency Room, you will see an Emergency Physician. If you are admitted to the hospital, you will be under the care of an internist. Typically he/she is the doctor on call for the Emergency Room, the doctor who covers your insurance (if you have insurance) or the doctor designated by your Family Doctor to take care of you in the hospital. If you have a primary physician chances are he/she no longer takes care of patients in the hospital. Hospitalists (physicians who only see patients in the hospital) now take care of family doctor’s patients that need to be admitted to the hospital. The primary doctor can select the hospitalist he wants to admit his patients but most of the time the healthcare insurance companies dictate which hospitalist patients should be admitted to. Patients without insurance get admitted to the internist on call for the emergency department. Every emergency room has a physician who is on call to admit, manage patients without any insurance, patients whose doctors do not come to the hospital and their insurance is not restrictive. Be sure to ask your doctor if they still go to the hospital and if they don’t who will be taking care of you if you ever have need to be admitted to the hospital.
